Mr. Lin Song-Ji, an Amis man from Hualien, lived a life that mirrors Taiwan’s history. His father was of Japanese descent. As a young man, he was forced to leave his homeland when the government pushed a forestry plan. He moved to the city to survive and spent years working as a driver, which kept him from forming a deep bond with his children. The home he built with his life’s effort now faces demolition due to urban development. His descendants cannot return to the mountains and struggle to survive in the city. Yet, they remain distant from him. In the end, he is left alone.

When I first met Grandpa Songji at the demolition site in Xizhou Tribal Village, he was sitting alone among the ruins, holding a bottle and calmly telling his story. His figure reminded me of my grandfather, who carried the trauma of war. Over three years, I witnessed Songji's talent, scars and solitude, and the way Indigenous people have long been torn apart by questions of identity within pressures of class, family and society. Through this documentary, I hope to reflect the loss and disorientation surrounding Indigenous identity, and Taiwan's continuing struggle to seek recognition.
