A stone triggers a dialectic on fate. On the eve of leaving Hong Kong, a young man visits his grandfather at an island nursing home to say goodbye, listening to stories of Hong Kong’s glorious past and his grandfather’s romantic history. That night, in a park now known as a gay cruising spot, he unexpectedly meets his grandfather’s secret lover from youth. Reality and memory blur, fictional and real fates intertwine, leaving him bewildered and uneasy as he faces an uncertain future.

WE JUST HAPPEN TO BE HERE is an unconventional narrative short film that adopts an improvisational approach. The director first sets the world view and story background, then lets the actors interact and converse spontaneously while moving, filming them on the go. The work attempts to capture the anxiety and unease felt by Hong Kong's younger generation amid struggles with migration and emigration. Through the protagonist's dreamlike journey, the film explores themes of existence, roots, and fate. In a park that has become a rendezvous spot, the protagonist has a surreal encounter with their grandfather in his youth, creating a sense of confusion and blurred temporal boundaries, reflecting the anxiety of contemporary individuals facing an uncertain future and the gradual disappearance of familiar landscapes.
