A documentary film sometimes records these ridiculousness and cruelty without the filmmaker knowing it during the process. It is only while sorting the footage after shooting, one might realize that it was those unwanted moments in the footage that fits the purpose. Chi-hsing’s silent moments and Molin acting the goat–they show their rebellious gestures against the society in front of my camera. And me, being a filmmaker behind the lens, is merely projecting my nonentity and solitude through them. It is possible that, in a split second, we all see a strange self and a noble soul in it.

WU Yao-Tung
WU Yao-Tung obtained a BA in Mass Communication from Fu Jen Catholic University and an MA from the Graduate Institute of Studies in Documentary at Tainan National University of the Arts. WU has made documentaries since 1996. His earlier film REI-MING BAND was awarded for the Taipei Special Award at 1997 Taipei Film Festival, and SWIMMING ON THE HIGHWAY was awarded for the Ogawa Shinsuke Prize at 1999 Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival. WU currently works as a freelance scriptwriter, director and cinematographer.

影片平行穿插於溫吉興和王墨林的日常，獨白的運用和提問的介入銜接了他們和導演的真實處境，在互相辯證和投射中流露各人的孤獨和掙扎，既是對他者的凝視亦是導演內心寫照。
After all the effects brought by GOODNIGHT AND GOODBYE in 2018, I think the knots between me and my documentary filmmaking had already been untied. In that sense I felt more free with my next project. And it was exactly how I was when I met Molin WANG and WEN Chi-hsing who sort of represent my dark, unspeakable emotions. Molin’s craziness and unpredictability as well as Chi-hsing’s posing sorrow have all become a kind of self-fulfillment to me through my lens. And then, I had to decorate this into a film on the little theatre scene in the 1980s. But besides the wall, the sea and a few characters painted on the shore, eventually what is left is only the blank-minded me, adrift in the water.
