"Room 404" is an essayistic response to the documentary "Room 525" shot by the artist duo during their art residency in Hong Kong in 2019. The film marks the transition from documentary to essay, from the real space to the reality marked by the most common error of the digital age 404: File Not Found.

Elysa Wendi is an artist based between Hong Kong and Singapore. A nomad in between places, cultures and art disciplines growing up in between lands of SouthEast Asia, her works straddle the amorphous boundaries between borders, languages, and histories. Currently, she works through hybrid documentary projects, audio-visual essays, and meta-choreographic rituals to explore the auto-fictional narratives of bodies and movements.
LEE Wai Shing
Shing Lee is a Hong Kong independent filmmaker working between documentary and experimental films. He is a prolific filmmaker with a collection of twenty five films created from 2010 - 2024. His recent film Room 404, co-directed with Elysa Wendi has been selected to the 74th Berlinale Forum Expanded.

Originally inspired by the concept of "Room 666" by Wim Wenders, the artist duo invited different artists to room 525 of a hotel during an art residency in the year of 2019. Being affected by the situation of social movement in the city, they started questioning the function of artists, or rather filmmakers like themselves in time like this. Being trapped in the hotel while looking at the chaotic landscape outside their window, the duo started the exploration to look inward and outward by inviting their filmmaker colleagues to the room for further introspection.
