The Mother of One Recluse was the work of Chinese film director YANG Shu, who made the film and offended the Chinese government. Since then she has been forced in exile in Hong Kong. Her mother who still lives in China and got stomach cancer and needs to have an operation. Her mother wishes to see her daughter and grandson, therefore, YANG takes the opportunity of a film festival event in Taiwan to make this family reunion happens.

Director

YING Liang

Ying Liang is a film director, teacher, curator and critic. He was awarded Best Director at Locarno International Film Festival for his feature film "When Night Falls" , Tiger Award at International Film Festival Rotterdam for his short film "Condolences" , and Best Live Short Film at Golden Horse Awards for his short film "A Sunny Day" . His newest short film is "I Have Nothing To Say" , and feature film is "A Family Tour" .

導演應亮以自身經歷改編,以質樸動人的電影美學吟述出被極權政體的荒謬流放後,一位流亡者的自由省思,與任何暴權都無法阻隔親情相伴下的高貴靈魂們,令人動容不已。

吳盛琳(《媽媽的口供》、《自由行》美術指導):
​ 片中插畫家及插畫作品的設定。我和導演初期對人物構想有很長的時間,插畫家的選擇跟導演做了很多的討論。插畫是讓觀眾可以稍做保留,它像是一種mv式的呈現。
關於電影畫面黑白或彩色的選擇。對於電影色調,反映人的情緒,反映角色穿梭香港及台灣的感覺。因為《媽媽的口供》故事很短,為了讓敘事更集中在母親的對白上面,而做了黑白的選擇。
對於美術組在哪一部份特別用心,是護照跟證件的考究。另外,在人物的物件使用上,也都盡可能區分了人們生活的地域性。
為什麼使用定鏡,導演想使用定鏡,是想讓觀眾去仔細的觀察到這個演員在表演上的細節,對話之間的情緒。這部片有很多的時間是集中在母女的對話上。透過對話釐清了彼此間個性迥異又經過五年不見的過程。
兩部作品都是導演人生經歷的投射。選擇女性去表現他自己,是因導演在書寫時會容易陷進角色,為求編劇的客觀,陳慧老師建議把性別轉化為女性,試圖去中立劇中的角色。
