A young architect and former social activist receives an invitation from his old comrade, who is now the city mayor, to join a large-scale urban development project. As demolition progresses, he finds himself drifting between memory and reality, gradually losing himself in the ruined landscape of the redevelopment zone. In the end, an unexpected incident forces both of them to confront the collapse of their ideals.

In the 2010s, Taiwan experienced a flourishing period of social movements, and I became involved in this wave of activism. Using a DV camera, I documented a housing justice movement that changed the course of my life. More than a decade later, many former activists have entered politics, while others have gradually withdrawn from public issues. Yet many of the social problems that brought us to the streets remain unresolved, and have become even more challenging.
The inspiration for The Architect Who Built His Own Collapse emerged from this reflection: two former comrades who once fought side by side eventually took different paths—one followed a conventional social path and became an architect, while the other entered the political system and became a mayor. Through their journeys, I explore how a generation moves between the realization and erosion of its ideals, gradually becoming what it once resisted.
