My family home lay within the Taoyuan Aerotropolis expropriation zone. After my mother’s death before the relocation, I return to a house that is no longer ours. Through sketches, conversations with my father, and my own embodied acts, I trace a landscape on the verge of disappearance, following the fragile yet enduring traces of “home.”

Hailing from Taoyuan Airport, Chien Man-Chun is a Taiwanese artist and filmmaker informed by years of working in the funeral and long-term care assistive device industries. Her practice spans moving image, installation, and painting, exploring family relationships, lingering emotions after parting, and the inevitable course of life. Through her work, she gently holds the fragile, unspoken fragments left behind.

The land expropriation of the Taoyuan Aerotropolis and uncontrollable shifts in the environment intertwine with upheavals within my family, leaving me with a profound sense of fragmentation. Divergent expectations have entangled my understanding of “home.”
Around my vanishing childhood home, I engage in “sketching” and “pacing”—not mere observation, but minute wrestlings within a political terrain. By retrieving fragments of diaries, paintings, videos, and performances, I reassemble a fragmented past with a nearly desolate present.
For me, creating is casting small pebbles against the towering wall of reality, attempting to carve a hole to glimpse other possibilities for living beyond it.
