Young girls have a tall order to fulfil from birth; they are given a biological mandate to do the same as their mothers have. As they age, the pressures and standards of being and becoming a woman are stacked higher and higher against them.
The ‘right of passage’ is important and sacred -- a necessary trauma on the body and psyche of a young girl. A reminder every month of the inevitable passing of time and the nature of our biology. I wanted to explore the idea of women facing abject adversity with resilience despite failure to achieve societal and maternal standards, be it struggling with poverty, abuse, illnesses or disabilities. More importantly, to open dialogue about children who are forced to grow up faster than they should -- a premature coming of age -- and Mothers who suffer from postpartum depression. Hour of the Flower is a portrait of women at the turn of the century, who were unable to keep pace with the progress of a rapidly evolving age.
