This is a short film that requires the audience to pay attention. Pay attention to what does not happen in the frame; pay attention to the dialogue that is not said in the frame; and most importantly, pay attention to the man who does not appear in the frame.

TING Chi-wen is a Taiwanese screenwriter and director. His latest experimental short, The Textual Way of Contemporary Dialogue (2022), was selected for the Lab Competition of Clermont-Ferrand.

Buying Tickets
The theme of this short film is politically correct, but the use of language is extremely offensive. Due to the rise of streaming service, audiences are becoming more and more accustomed to subtitles, but can subtitles really represent the content of the image? Or has it usurped the power of interpretation? And isn’t the tension between subjectivity and others’ interpretation similar to the dilemma faced by women in #metoo movement? This work reminds people that in the face of violence and tragedy, we shouldn’t get lost in the game and forget authenticity.
