Nestled in the centre of Hong Kong, the neighbourhood of Hung Hom is a study in contradictions. While the dead are transported to the nearby funeral homes, the living crowd its bustling streets. The affluent live in luxury residences towering over dilapidated buildings marked for demolition, while the poor sift through construction waste and trash for a meagre living wage. Capturing the ebb and flow of this urban district over a five-year period, WONG Siu-pong’s latest observational documentary provokes thoughtful discussion at a time when waste disposal has become a hot-button issue.

WONG Siu-Pong
WONG Siu-pong is an independent documentary director based in Hong Kong. Supported by CNEX, his first feature-length documentary Fish Story (2013) won Best Documentary at FIRST International Film Festival, and was nominated for the New Talent Award at Hong Kong Asian Film Festival. His second and third feature-length documentaries Snuggle (2016) and 3cm (2019) were awarded as a “Film of Merit” at the Hong Kong Film Critics Society Awards (HKFCSA) and have been selected for numerous international film festivals.
My journey began in 2017, nine years after the announcement of the new railway project, which later soared from HK$30B to $100B, leaving old buildings and many homes neglected. Amidst the backdrop of skyscrapers and the stream of visitors to the Kwun Yum Temple, I witnessed the harsh realities of the neighborhood. I became deeply intrigued by the intricate relationship between the residents and the process of discarding, offering a unique lens into the socio-economic and cultural dynamics of Hong Kong.
